…the average alcoholic on entering AA knows very well how to pray, even if he does not believe in God. Time and time again he will have asked God to help him stop drinking, but since God has (up to this very point) not seen fit to do such a thing unless the alcoholic starts taking responsibility for his own actions (which, by virtue of his condition, he absolutely cannot do), he has likely decided that God is either deaf or dead.
